Gennady Golovkin defends his collection of middleweight titles against explosive puncher Daniel Jacobs at Madison Square Garden. Here’s how to watch Golovkin-Jacobs on television or online.
As WBA (“super”), WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) diligently pursues a fight with lineal champion and burgeoning ducker Canelo Alvarez, the Kazakh star refuses to rest on his laurels. Indeed, in taking on WBA “regular” titlist and cancer survivor Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs), Golovkin has once again affirmed his desire to seek out the most dangerous competition willing to face him.
In Golovkin’s last fight, he bludgeoned and quite literally broke the face of IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, who gamely rose in weight and had fleeting moments of tagging Triple G in a brief, thrilling brawl. Reactionaries have pointed to Brook’s pockets of success as signs that Golovkin may be slipping, and the narrative of how he’ll deal with Jacobs’ thunderous power has crept into the Golovkin-Jacobs pre-fight hype.
But ultimately, any blunt criticism of Gennady Golovkin and the state of his fighting prowess is a comical fabrication. Sure, Golovkin isn’t perfect — no fighter is. However, he’s unequivocally one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, and his frightening power is only surpassed by his technical virtuosity. Make no mistake, Jacobs is a legitimately dangerous foe. Golovkin, though, is a generational champion.
