Following the Xavier Musketeers upsetting the Florida State Seminoles, a look at the updated 2017 NCAA Tournament bracket

The Florida State Seminoles at one point in the regular season looked as if they might be the best team in the ACC. However, that proved to be false, but they still earned a No. 3 seed when the 2017 NCAA Tournament bracket was announced and had high hopes in March Madness. Those high hopes probably didn’t include getting upset in the Second Round on Saturday.

After having to fend off the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the First Round all the way until the final buzzer, Jonathan Isaac and Florida State hoped for a better showing this time around when they matched up with the Xavier Musketeers. Instead, they played substantially worse.

Isaac, Dwayne Bacon and Xavier Rathan-Mayes all struggled to find their rhythm right from the jump. Meanwhile, the Musketeers’ star guard, junior Trevon Blueitt, was sensational once again. He scored or got to the line at will and opened up a big lead over the Seminoles in the first half.

Xavier also responded on the defensive end. When Florida State looked like they might go on a run, they either had a crucial stop or a response in the chamber. FSU’s attempts to come back eventually dissipated and the Musketeers earned their second-straight upset of the tourney.

After a total of zero teams handed a seed Nos. 1-4 lost in the First Round, that’s two losses for such teams in just four games on Saturday. Was the upset-quiet first two days of March Madness the calm before the storm? It’s at least possible with the way things are looking thanks to Villanova and Florida State.
