Taking a look at when the mega-fight between GGG and Canelo Alvarez will be taking place

On Saturday night, Gennady Golovkin (GGG) filled Madison Square Garden in New York, NY to face Daniel Jacobs in a middleweight bout. Golovkin took a 23-match knockout streak into the fight and an unbeaten record. After 12 rounds, however, GGG saw his streak end and had to think that his record might be in jeopardy. Ultimately, the judges ruled unanimously in his favor, though, keeping his record unblemished.

Almost certainly, after such a close fight with Jacobs, there will be a rematch somewhere down the line. However, what appears next on the docket for GGG is a mega-fight that has been in the works for some time. That fight, of course, would be against Golden Boy Promotions’ and Oscar De La Hoya’s prized pupil, Canelo Alvarez.

The two sides have been trying to get the fight done for quite some time now, but things always seemed to either get pushed aside or back. Given the events at the end of 2016, beginning of 2017 and then with GGG confirming that he wants his next fight to be against Canelo, it seems inevitable that these two men will be facing off.

Now the only question left to settle, barring another setback of course, is when and where they’ll throw down at. Where the fight takes place will certainly take much longer to find out. As for the when, there are no specifics just yet.

What we do know, though, is that Canelo has a fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. coming up on May 6 at 164 pounds, some 10 pounds heavier than where he normally fights. More specifically, it’s closer to the weight where he would fight GGG at, meaning that it’s likely indicating that the mega-fight is close. Additionally, there’s this tweet from De La Hoya himself from June 2016 that’s worth referencing given that:

So while there’s nothing set just yet, it’s a safe bet to keep your weekends open in Fall 2017. All indications and fight dates for both GGG and Canelo Alvarez point to their bout taking place then. And when they finally do stand toe-to-toe in the ring, you’re not going to want to miss it.
