The Colorado Rockies are having way more fun in their clubhouse than your favorite team.

Spring training is a period of down time for baseball players. While they’re getting ready for the regular season, there’s a lot of time when players are sitting around doing nothing. Boredom can be a huge incentive for creativity, so spring training tends to see shenanigans. Everybody loves ping-pong. The Colorado Rockies decided to have a tournament in their clubhouse. Special assistant to the general manager (and former Rockies third baseman) Vinny Castilla squared off against Director of Player Development Zach Wilson.

Usually, it’s the players and coaches who get involved in the weird tournaments. But this involves two members of the front office. The players got hyped for it and seemed to have fun. At the end of the day, Castilla and Wilson might have made fools of themselves, but they did it in the name of team building.

The Rockies are looking to improve on last season’s 75-87 record, relying on their lineup to do so. While their pitching could be an issue, that’s understandable because no pitcher in their right mind wants to pitch half of their games at Coors Field. Jon Gray pitched better than his 4.61 ERA reflects. Tyler Chatwood quietly put up a very solid season, notching a 3.87 ERA despite having an ERA of over 6.00 at home.

Castilla is about as close to being a Rockies legend as it gets. He ranks fourth in franchise history in hits, fourth in total bases, sixth in doubles, and third in home runs. Castilla was a member of the Rockies back in the 1990’s.
