8. Trey Burke’s 30-foot shot vs. Kansas – 2013

Despite Michigan being a No. 4 seed, their run to the championship was one of the more unlikely stories that year. If anything, because many expected them to lose to Kansas in the Sweet 16. Instead, those two battled to one of the best regional semifinals in recent memory.

Kansas looked to be in complete control through the first half, and midway through the second. With seven minutes left, Michigan trailed by as much as 14 points before they made a frantic comeback. The key to their late run was Trey Burke. After the sophomore was held scoreless in the first half, he exploded into life in the second.

Kansas had plenty of chances to put it away, but their most critical mistake came with 12 seconds left. Elijah Johnson had the chance to make it a two-possession game at the free throw line, but he missed his second attempt, which gave Michigan life.

With the ball in Burke’s hand, he pulled up from 30 feet to try and tie the game. Kansas seemed content with letting him take that shot, but it hit nothing but net, sending the Wolverines fans into a frenzy. They won 87-85, with Burke scoring all 23 of his points in the second half and overtime.

From then on, Michigan rode the hot hands of Burke and Mitch McGary all the way to the Championship Game. They lost to first overall seed Louisville, but it was still the furthest the Wolverines made it since the Fab Five era.

Since that game, Kansas has consistently been able to reload and compete for the national championship. Michigan, meanwhile, is back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2014. Against a stacked Oregon team, the Wolverines will hope they can re-capture the magic of Trey Burke and that 2013 team.
