Johnny Manziel could be joining the New Orleans Saints, with head coach Sean Payton reportedly interested.
The quarterback market is empty and weak right now. This leaves teams who are looking for a backup to have to explore other options. According to Ian Rapoport, the New Orleans Saints are looking for a backup quarterback. The tree they’re barking up? None other than Johnny Manziel’s.

FA QB Johnny Manziel has kept a low-profile as he trains for a return. #Saints coach Sean Payton appears to have taken an interest in him.

The #Saints still need a backup QB. Payton could make the most of Manziel’s talent. Drew Brees would be a perfect mentor. A lot makes sense.

With a very weak market, the Saints are exploring adding a polarizing, but talented player. New Orleans is taking a significant risk if they sign the former Heisman Trophy winner, but the reward could be huge as well. Manziel would get to study under future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees. Studying under someone like him could be the best thing to happen to the former Texas A&M quarterback’s career.
However, there is a ton of risk in signing him. Manziel hasn’t been able to get on the field due to a variety of issues. Whether it’s partying too much or being lazy, Johnny Football didn’t play much football even when he was with the Cleveland Browns. After being drafted by them in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Manziel started just eight games for them before being cut in 2016.

Currently, the quarterback is back in school at Texas A&M. Signing with the Saints would obviously change his career plans. Manziel is preparing for a life outside of football, but if New Orleans wants him, it’s hard to see him turning them down.
The Saints could provide him with a stable situation. It’s on Manziel to earn a future spot on the team, particularly with Brees entering retirement age. This could be just what Johnny Football needs to save his career. But can he stay out of trouble off the field in a city known for Bourbon Street?
