In an incredible overtime spectacle at Madison Square Garden, Chris Chiozza sent the Florida Gators to the 2017 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
The NCAA Tournament was meant for games like the one between the Florida Gators and Wisconsin Badgers on Friday night. It was a test of two teams that didn’t give the other an inch. In the end, a classic game was had.
The Gators held an eight-point advantage with time running down in regulation, but costly turnovers allowed the Badgers to make it close. Down three and needing a shot to tie it and send the game to overtime, the Badgers hit the first of two crazy threes that defined this game.
Hobbling down the floor, Zak Showalter let go of a shot to send the game to overtime. While there was time on the clock, the Gators couldn’t get a good look. In overtime, the Badgers jumped on the Gators right away.
KeVaughn Allen had 35 points, but the Gators just looked like a team that ran out of gas. Instead, they found another gear and turned a four-point deficit into a two-point one. After a turnover, the Gators would tie the game.
With time running down and the Badgers possessing the ball, Nigel Hayes hit two free throws to give his team the lead with four seconds on the clock. With no timeouts remaining, all Florida had was to hope for a miracle.
That miracle ended up being Chris Chiozza. The guard sped past the defense and let go of a three for the win as time expired. It hit nothing but net and the Gators celebrated the improbable victory while everyone was left stunned. The Gators are now going to the Elite Eight.
Three Stars
Nigel Hayes was an animal for the Badgers. He scored 22 points and hit the two key free throws late. Unfortunately for Hayes, the Gators managed to hit a crazy shot to win the game.
For the Gators, Chris Chiozza certainly was the second star of the game. After all, he hit the shot that will be remembered for a long time. His performance off the bench sparked the team.
KeVaughn Allen is the top star of the game. His 35 points paced the offense in the victory. Without him, the Gators don’t come out of Madison Square Garden as the winners.
