WrestleMania X

Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart

Once again, I had a very hard time picking a winner here and I’m sure there are plenty of you that were expecting the Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michals Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship to be sitting in this spot. But I had to go with my gut on this one and I still think that the opener between Bret Hart and Owen Hart was the better match. But trust me, it was really close.

Bret Hart had become the face of WWE by this point and little brother just didn’t like it. They built up to this nicely with Owen becoming more and more jealous and more and more upset at his brother’s accomplishments, culminating in Owen turning on him following a tag match at the Royal Rumble. To complicate matters, Bret ended up winning the Royal Rumble … well, sort of as he and Lex Luger went out at the same time, causing a big title controversy. So it was decided that the title would be defended twice at WrestleMania. Lex Luger would get the first shot at champion Yokozuna with Bret facing the winner. But in the interest of fairness, it was decreed that Bret would also wrestle twice and Owen was the obvious choice.

I absolutely love this match. Owen was so cocky early on and celebrated after every little move he pulled off. Good stuff. From there, this just turned into a classic wrestling match. You knew this match could be something special but it turned into more than that. This was brother vs. brother and two students of the Hart dungeon going at it. There were suplexes and superplexes and rollups and bridges and piledrivers and Russian legsweeps and just really everything you’d expect from these two. But it also had that brotherly intensity to it and there were slaps and punches and all of that as well.

The ending saw Owen hit a great low blow with a backwards kick that he took advantage of by slapping on a Sharpshooter, which Bret powered out of and put one of his own but Owen was able to break the hold by making it to the ropes. Bret slung his brother into the ropes and then jumped on his shoulders for a victory roll but Owen just dropped and got the 1-2-3 to pick up a huge surprise win. Bret would win the title later in the night but the highlight of his WrestleMania X will always be the match he had with his brother. This is what great wrestling looks like.
