WrestleMania 2

The Dream Team vs. The British Bulldogs

WrestleMania 2 was a trainwreck and is still considered by most to be one of the worst in history. It was chaotic enough with Vince attempting to have the show in three different cities, which is a nice novelty but you still need some good matches to help out. And WrestleMania 2 didn’t have many. The Hulk Hogan-King Kong Bundy steel cage match for the title is fun for nostalgia’s sake but that’s about it. The Roddy Piper vs Mr. T boxing match is still brutal to watch this day and even Randy Savage couldn’t save the event in his Intercontinental Championship match with George “The Animal” Steele. The 20-man battle royal with the NFL guys, which was won by Andre the Giant, was entertaining enough, but again, it’s needing the novelty to sell.

Nope, the best match of WrestleMania 2 was the main event in Chicago that saw The British Bulldogs take on Brutus Beefcake and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine for the tag titles. Even that match had Ozzy Osbourne at ringside. But honestly, this is the only truly great match of the first two WrestleManias. Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid were so over at this time and if you haven’t seen old footage of these guys, go back and find some. They worked so well together as a unit and this was on full display that night. They worked quick tags and were so smooth with suplexes, plus Davey Boy had a lot of power. Valentine and Beefcake were excellent here as well in the heel role and “The Hammer” was more or less WWE’s version of Ric Flair at the time. He wore the flashy robes and had a lot of the same mannerisms, which makes sense seeing as how Flair learned a lot from Valentine’s dad, Johnny.

The finish saw Smith slam Valentine into Dynamite Kid, who was perched on the top rope at the time and took a hard fall to the floor, to pick up the 1-2-3 and the crowd went insane as the Bulldogs won their first and surprisingly only tag titles in WWE.
