WrestleMania XXVII

Triple H vs. The Undertaker

WrestleMania XXVII had a few pretty solid matches on the card. Alberto Del Rio and Edge kicked off the show with a nice bout for the World Heavyweight Championship, a match that would turn out to be Edge’s last as he would retire from the ring just eight days later, and the Randy Orton vs. CM Punk bout was received nicely as well. But you’d be hard-pressed to find too many people that don’t think the No Holds Barred Match between Triple H and The Undertaker was the best match of the night.

After facing and defeating Shawn Michaels two years in a row, it made sense for The Undertaker to battle Triple H here as The Game was hell bent on getting a little revenge for his DX running mate and attempting to end the streak himself after HBK basically said that Hunter couldn’t do it. Nevertheless, the match was set, making this the second time these two would go at it on the biggest stage of them all but not a lot is ever said about the first match between them at WrestleMania X-Seven.

The crowd was into this one from the beginning and they kept the action moving with some nice spots like going through Michael Cole’s little box and Triple H taking the backdrop off of the announce table. ‘Taker almost killed himself again with his dive over the top and Hunter was partly to blame but that didn’t stop The Deadman from continuing and he went through the Spanish announce table soon after. Trips brought a chair in later but it was pretty quickly used on him but he fought back with a Pedigree for a near fall, one of three that ‘Taker would kick out of. And Triple H was also able to fight off some finishers by kicking out of The Last Ride out of the corner and the Tombstone and started beating the tar out of The Undertaker with a chair, including a shot to the head which is never seen anymore.

The drama continued as Triple H told ‘Taker to stay down, much like ‘Taker had done to Shawn the previous year, and then hit him with a Tombstone and the cover with the arms crossed and the tongue out, which was a pretty awesome spot as nobody disrespected The Phenom like that. But The Undertaker kicked out and Trips went for his signature sledgehammer but before he could get in the big shot, ‘Taker locked in Hell’s Gate and got The Game to tap out in a very smart finish that would play right into what happened the next year.
