WrestleMania V

Randy Savage vs. Hulk Hogan

This was also a pretty stacked card with 14 matches on the docket but there were only a few that I would consider terrible with The Red Rooster and Bobby Heenan claiming the title of worst match of the night. And poor Andre could just barely move at this point so his match with Jake “The Snake” Roberts really was hard to watch but I thought the Intercontinental Championship between Rick Rude and The Ultimate Warrior was done quite well. I liked the tag match with Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard taking on Strike Force as well. But the match of the night has to go once again to the main event with Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage.

The build to this match is arguably the best build in wrestling history. It was a lot easier to do back then but they dragged out the tension between Savage and Hogan over an entire year with incidents at SummerSlam and Survivor Series involving Elizabeth and The Hulkster accidentally eliminating Macho Man at the Royal Rumble. This led to a beautiful turn at Main Event, back when this show was important, which saw Randy’s jealousy finally get the better of him after Liz was taken out during a tag match against Big Boss Man and Akeem. Great stuff.

As for the match itself, it was pretty obvious the way they were going to go but that didn’t make things any less entertaining. Elizabeth being at ringside was a nice touch and Jesse Ventura’s commentary about her going home with the winner is absolute gold. Hogan showed off his power early but Savage tried to get back into it with classic heel moves like a rake to the eyes, using Liz as a shield (classic Macho) and pulling some hair to gain an advantage. Hogan was eventually busted open after a kick to the face and he wore that crimson mask nicely. Savage had the advantage for a while and even managed to get Elizabeth ejected at one point and hit a nice flying elbow, which we all know Hogan was going to kick out of and do his thing but all of this worked so fluently as these two knew each other so well. They had a nice chemistry and all was right with the world as Hogan regained the title.
