Davis Webb could be a first round pick if what he’s being told by other NFL teams is true.

The 2017 NFL Draft features some intriguing quarterbacks. Three will likely be first rounders and all it takes is one more desperate team to make it four. California Golden Bears quarterback Davis Webb could be the fourth one. He’s talked to various NFL teams and apparently teams are thinking he’ll go in the first round.

"“I’ve talked to a lot of NFL people,” Webb said , via ESPN. “And double-digit teams have told me I’m a first-round guy. Every meeting I’ve had, they’ve said I’m one of the best quarterbacks on the board.”"

Of course, Webb could be exaggerating. But this seems a little bit weird. If anything, Patrick Mahomes II from Texas Tech is more likely to be a first round pick. He has a much better arm than Webb and can make big plays. California runs an offense that doesn’t require him to throw deep passes and he never ran a pro-style offense.

Sure, Mahomes is very raw and could be the next Jay Cutler (in a bad way). However, at least he has experience in a pro-style offense.

More realistically, Webb should expect to be drafted in the second or third round. He certainly has some nice tools. However, Webb has to be more consistent and must develop confidence in his arm. He won’t survive in the NFL if he’s just throwing short passes.

The days of game managers like Chad Pennington running offenses are over. Webb doesn’t have the upside of Mahomes, nor is he as polished as Mitchell Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, or even DeShone Kizer. If teams are calling him a first round pick, they’re either lying or severely mistaken.
