1. Ty’Son Williams vs. A.J. Turner for starting running back

Overall, the offense is the side of the ball to really pay attention to during South Carolina’s spring game. The receiving corps could be enticing to examine through spring practice and into the summer.

However, the biggest race on the South Carolina football team is who will end up winning the starting running back job: Ty’Son Williams or A.J. Turner? Both are redshirt sophomores, but have arrived at this opportunity in totally different ways.

Turner came to South Carolina in 2015 and redshirted. He played a bit in his redshirt freshman season during 2016. Williams initially played his college ball for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He transferred after his true freshman season to South Carolina. 2017 will be his first year he is eligible to play for the Gamecocks.

Realistically, both running backs are going to get ample touches in the South Carolina backfield as a tandem. Hopefully they both push each other to get better every day in practice. However, someone will end up with the bulk of the workload. Whomever does better in the spring game could foreshadow a starting role with the 2017 Gamecocks.
