The Dallas Cowboys are making sure that the team’s all-time leader in receptions will finish his career with a star on his helmet.

Bill Parcells’ first year with the Dallas Cowboys was in 2003. He used the fifth overall pick in the draft to grab Kansas State cornerback Terence Newman. It’s worth noting that he just re-upped with the Minnesota Vikings for a 15th NFL season.

Two rounds later, the Hall of Fame coach and football mind used a third-round selection on University of Tennessee tight end Jason Witten. He’s proven to be one of the most consistent players at his position ever and continues to climb the league’s all-time list in terms of career receptions. Only six players in NFL annals have topped the 14-year performer’s 1,089 catches.

Now comes word that Witten will have more time to add to that total. According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the prolific tight end has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Cowboys. That means the former Volunteer will be under contract through the 2021 season. And don’t bet against Witten playing that long.

The reliable pro hasn’t missed a game since his rookie season in ’03 and hasn’t been in the starting lineup since 2004. Witten has totaled at least 60 receptions in 13 consecutive season and has been a 1,000-yard pass-catcher four times during his impressive career. The 10-time Pro Bowler turns 35 years old in May. But he’s shown few signs of slowing down anytime soon. And that’s great news for young quarterback Dak Prescott and the defending NFC East champions.
