Mario Hezonja hasn’t had a great season, but this dunk sure was awesome

Mario Hezonja has struggled so far in his very brief NBA career. The second-year wing out of Croatia has struggled to find playing time on a bad Magic team. A lot of this has to do with not being able to find his shooting stroke. Entering the NBA, Hezonja was supposed to be a shooter that had the ability to take guys off the dribble and crash toward the hoop. Unfortunately, he hasn’t had the chance to show any offensive skills so far outside of his passing.

That was until tonight against the Thunder. Orlando has been eliminated from the playoffs and this has freed them to give young players like Hezonja a little more run. The results so far haven’t been good, but every once in a while he has a flash that reminds people why he was top draft pick in his class. Tonight’s reminder was this monster throwdown on Enes Kanter.

This is the best highlight of Hezonja’s career so far. He uses his length and athleticism to get by his man then just uses pure power to dunk on an unsuspecting Kanter. What Kanter was thinking trying to get in the way of this one is anybody’s guess, but now he’ll be on the wall of every Croatian in Europe with Hezonja dunking on him. This also was the spark into a very competitive game on Orlando’s part. Maybe that’s the true secret to this season — getting Hezonja buckets.

Hopefully this is a sign of good things in the future for Hezonja. He’s been disappointing early on, but there’s hope he can turn it around and become a real player in the future. It would be nice to see highlights like this on a more consistent basis. That just might happen if Hezonja turns into the player we all thought he would be.
