Bobby Roode defended his NXT Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura at NXT TakeOver: Orlando.

Ever since Bobby Roode won the NXT Championship from Shinsuke Nakamura, back at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio over Royal Rumble weekend, Nakamura has been waiting for his re-match. That re-match happened tonight in Orlando, and if Nakamura could get the win he’d become the first three-time NXT Champion.

Nakamura was looking for revenge after a knee injury at the hands of Roode took him out of action for a few weeks. Roode needed the win to cement himself as the top dog in NXT.

In front of a white hot crowd, both men made their own unique entrances. After some back and forth action in the first few minutes, Nakamura took control of the match. Nakamura looked to take Roode down to the outside of the ring, but the former NXT Champion ended up bouncing off the guardrail at ringside instead. Roode took advantage of the downed man, concentrating his attack on the neck and arms of Nakamura, as the crowd tried to cheer Nakamura back into the match.

Nakamura got himself back on top, with some vicious looking striking to take Roode out of the ring. With Roode prone on the ring apron, Nakamura hit a big knee drop over the neck of the champion. That would gain him a two count, before Roode hit a series of vicious elbows, and a strong clothesline to the jaw to take Nakamura down again.

Nakamura hit a desperation kick, then set Roode up for the Kinshasa but was hit with a chop block to his previously injured knee. Roode continued the methodical attack on his downed challenger, as Nakamura screamed in pain on the mat.

Roode locked in a Figure Four Leg Lock before Nakamura locked in his own submission in the form of brutal looking arm bar. Roode broke the hold by reaching the ropes, as Nakamura laid in some stiff kicks.

Nakamura positioned Roode on the top turnbuckle and attempted a knee strike, only for Roode to move and Nakamura’s knee collided with the turnbuckle instead. That didn’t stop Nakamura though, as more stiff kicks rained down on Roode. Roode countered with a back stabber for another two count.

Trading strikes in the middle of the ring, Nakamura eventually got a two count after a big knee to a downed Roode. As he lined up the Kinshasa once again, Roode bailed out of the ring. Nakamura threw him back in, Roode hit his Glorious DDT, only for Nakamura to kick out at two yet again.

Roode headed out to ringside to grab the ring bell, Nakamura eventually hit a reverse exploder suplex, but saw his Kinshasa attempt reversed into a spine buster for another Roode two count.

Roode hit a huge swinging implant DDT to finaly get the three count and retain his NXT Championship. Neither man looked like a winner after that match. Could this be the final time we see Shinsuke Nakamura in an NXT ring?
