STP 500 starting grid: Starting lineup for NASCAR from Martinsville
With Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying rained out, Kyle Larson leads the complete starting grid for Sunday’s STP 500 from Martinsville Speedway.
Kyle Larson’s hot streak atop the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series continued with the pole position for the STP 500, thanks to things getting a little wet at Martinsville Speedway.
Inclement weather canceled Friday’s scheduled qualifying session, which meant that the starting grid for Sunday’s race was set based on current owner points as per the league rule book. That means Larson — as the current Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series points leader — will lead the field to green.
It will be his second consecutive pole, as the No. 42 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car was also number one for last weekend’s Auto Club 400 in Fontana. That worked out well for Larson, who went on to win the race.
Fellow young gun Chase Elliott joins Larson on the front row, while a pack of wily veterans will be right on their bumpers. Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano round out the Top 5 to start the STP 500. That means four of the five frontrunners are also 2017 race winners.
