It’s Opening Day, and the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox meet on the South Side to begin the 2017 MLB season.

Justin Verlander is set to make his ninth career Opening Day start in what will be his 13th season for the Detroit Tigers as they travel to Chicago to open the 2017 season against the White Sox. The Tigers are a contender in the AL Central, and hope to get off to a strong start against the rebuilding White Sox.

Verlander started slow last year and posted a 7.16 ERA through his first three starts and had a 6.49 ERA in his first six outings, but dominated the rest of the season and finished second in the voting for the AL Cy Young Award. The 34-year old compiled a 16-9 record and 3.04 ERA with a league leading 254 strikeouts in 227.2 innings spread across 34 starts.
