The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns

What we learned: We learned here that the last bell has rung for The Undertaker.

It had been rumored throughout the day that The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns would be replacing Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg as the final match of the night, and when the Universal Championship match came on when it did, the end of this match became a little predictable.

As for the match itself, it will become more of an afterthought when talking about the history of The Undertaker and it needs to because there were a lot of points in this one that were really hard to watch. I like the story they were telling in there but the execution just wasn’t there at points. Roman trying to get ‘Taker into the Tombstone on that reversal was brutal. The Deadman couldn’t seem to remember how to lock in Hell’s Gate and he just looked physically run down; he should at his age with everything he’s put his body through for the past 26 years in WWE.

There were a lot of people that were expecting or wanted Roman Reigns to go full heel here but I’m glad they didn’t go through with that. He was a bit more aggressive and showed some signs of doing that but it never went all the way. It was almost a mercy killing at the end but it was pretty great to see ‘Taker kick out as many times as he did, even if we knew what the result was going to be. Reigns hit a super-duper spear at the end to win it and like a pro, he left the area pretty quickly to allow what happened at the end.

As soon as things got quiet, it was pretty evident that this was it for The Undertaker, especially when he put all of his gear back on. He then took off his gloves, his coat, his hat and left them in the middle of the ring before walking out of WrestleMania one last time. Very touching moment there. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

What’s next: Well, that’s obviously it for The Undertaker. It will be interesting to see if he lets them do any kind of big ceremony for him as that’s really not his gig. And he’ll no doubt be the Hall of Fame headliner at next year’s WrestleMania. As for Roman Reigns, he can go into RAW being as cocky or as humble as he wants to be. He just retired The Undertaker and is really now the big dog of WWE.

Overall, WrestleMania 33 was a bit of a disappointment. The early matches were pretty solid but the women’s matches weren’t as great as they could have been and the WWE Championship match definitely did not live up to expectations.
