The Chicago Bulls have seen an uptick in their performance at the end of the season, but will still need a major roster overhaul to put themselves into championship contention. Texas center Jarrett Allen won’t move the needle much in that regard, but he does have the potential to be a solid roleplayer within a rotation.
The 6-foot-11 freshman is intriguing because of his physical measurements. With a nearly 7-foot-6 wingspan and solid athleticism, Allen should be an absolute monster on the defensive end. That didn’t necessarily translate in his first season at Texas as he spent a lot of time playing with a second big, forcing him to defend power forwards and often abandon the paint. Allen averaged just 1.9 blocks per 40 minutes, but that’s a number that has a good potential to improve in the NBA.
Offensively, Allen will fit best as a pick-and-roll big. He has the vertical explosiveness to finish above the rim, but needs to work on setting harder screens to help create additional space for himself and his guards. Allen also has a decent looking mid-range jumper and reportedly shoots it well from 3 outside of game action. He may ultimately become a viable pick-and-pop options as well.
