This is the second of three first round selections for the Portland Trail Blazers and with it, they can snag a shooting guard who can bring in a scoring punch off the bench. Duke’s Luke Kennard averaged 22.0 points per 40 minutes on a 63.0 true shooting percentage.
The sophomore can score from just about anywhere on the floor. He made 43.8 percent of his 201 3-point attempts this season while taking a high volume of 3s and shooting 85.6 percent from the free throw line. Kennard can also score inside the arc where he uses a collection of ball fakes and crafty counter moves to create space for himself. He may need to improve as a shot creator for himself, but Kennard has the potential to lead a second unit on the offensive end.
Defensively, there’s not a ton to latch onto with Kennard. He has solid size at 6-foot-6, but he has a negative wingspan and never did much to inspire confidence on defense in a Blue Devils’ uniform. Long-term the best hope is that Kennard will be a serviceable team defender as he will likely never be an individual stopper. That said, defense likely won’t be the reason teams draft Kennard. His scoring is valuable enough.
