Orlando Magic teammates Elfrid Payton and Aaron Gordon make use of a backboard to pull off this great transition jam against the Brooklyn Nets.

Though the Orlando Magic front office may not know how to use a whiteboard effectively, two of their starting players know how to use a backboard effectively. Point guard Elfrid Payton and power forward Aaron Gordon have developed great chemistry these last few years.

In transition against the Brooklyn Nets at home on Thursday night, Payton throws the ball off the backboard to a high-flying Gordon for the spectacular slam. Brooklyn had no chance to defend this great fast break play.

The Magic will miss the Eastern Conference Playoffs yet again. Their 2016-17 NBA season will come to a close when they play their final regular season game on Wednesday, Apr. 12 against the Detroit Pistons.

Orlando has not made the Eastern Conference Playoffs since the end of the Dwightmare saga five years ago. This gives the Magic the longest active playoff drought in the East. They have a young core in place, but general manager Rob Hennigan may have seen his time in Central Florida come to an end after that whiteboard fiasco earlier this week. How does one foolishly leak an entire offseason’s worth of plans?

Gordon for Dario Saric, straight up. Who says no? Maybe everybody, but Philadelphia may want a power forward that can play above the rim. The 76ers get hurt a lot in the frontcourt. Gordon is still a kid, but he’s not going to be this great above the rim forever. He is of the Blake Griffin prototype and will have to pivot in his late 20s like Griffin did to sustain success in the NBA.

The Magic had another rough year, but still have the players to put together the occasional highlight for the folks at home. Orlando may have lost the battle of the whiteboard, but won the battle of the backboard on that great play from Payton to Gordon.
