Kyle Schwarber unloaded on Brett Cecil to hit his first home run of the 2017 season.
The Chicago Cubs entered the top of the seventh inning of their Thursday afternoon contest with the St. Louis Cardinals trailing 4-2. Kyle Schwarber changed that with one swing of the bat, crushing his first home run of the season to give the Cubs a 5-4 lead. The big left fielder took Brett Cecil out to deep right field, showing that a lefty-lefty matchup is of little concern when it comes to his raw power.
It took one flick of Schwarber’s wrists to send the ball flying out over 400 feet.

Daren Willman, one of the geniuses behind MLB’s Statcast, had the details on the mammoth home run off Schwarber’s bat.

Schwarber’s home run capped off a strange rally for the Cubs. The inning started with what appeared to be an easy strikeout. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina blocked strike three to Matt Szczur, but could not locate the ball at his feet. In one of the weirder plays you will ever see in an MLB game, the ball was affixed to the front of Molina’s catcher’s vest. From there, Cecil melted down and allowed four runs to score.

Not to call anyone out for using a foreign substance to doctor a baseball, but this definitely defies the laws of physics.

Schwarber is off to a very hot start at the plate for the Cubs. He is batting .300 through the first three games of the year, but also has drawn three walks. It’s a small sample size, for sure, but he appears poised to approach 40 home runs this season. Schwarber is proving to be a very good fit for Joe Maddon as a leadoff hitter. He will not steal many bases, but he has a rare combination of bat speed, power, and plate discipline.
