New York Giants news: Eli Manning excited for Brandon Marshall
By Trey Daubert
The offseason acquisition of Brandon Marshall is expected to give the New York Giants a big boost. Eli Manning is happy to have him.
Eli Manning has a shiny new receiver to work with. Brandon Marshall was signed this offseason by the Giants as a complimentary receiver to Odell Beckham Jr., giving New York a nice three-wide set including Sterling Shepard. Manning compared the Marshall addition to former Giants wide out Plaxico Burress.
"“I was excited when we made that acquisition,” Manning said, via the New York Post. “He’s obviously a big target and smart, asks a lot of questions, he’s going to pick up the offense quickly. … I think Plaxico was kind of the last one similar to that size. They can be open when they’re not really open. You don’t want to get into a habit, it’s not a jump-ball but you can throw him open. He’s been in lots of offenses and he gets open a lot of different ways, very disciplined in his route-running and understanding concepts. I think he’ll be good for that receiver room and in our locker room, having that veteran presence.”"
Burress, of course, helped the Giants win their first Super Bowl during the Eli Manning era, catching the winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl XLII to knock off the New England Patriots. While Burress won’t be getting into the Hall of Fame without a ticket, he was a premier receiver during his prime and one of the best red-zone targets of the last 10 years.
Marshall, 33, has a chance to shine in this offense. He should have a bunch of one-on-one matchups with Beckham being double-teamed on the other side. Marshall signed a two-year, $12 million contract this offseason to play for New York.

Marshall could have a rejuvenated season with the Giants after being plagued by horrible quarterback play with the Jets. He is only one year removed from season with 109 catches, 1,502 yards, and 14 touchdowns in 2015.
