8. The Undertaker vs. Triple H – WrestleMania X-Seven

This match often gets lost in the shuffle because of how amazing WrestleMania X-Seven was, what with the Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock battle and the TLC match with Edge & Christian taking on the Hardys and Dudleys. But the first of the three WrestleMania matches between The Undertaker and Triple H was pretty good, even if they didn’t want to really acknowledge it a decade later when these two met again. This was also actually the first pay-per-view match ever between these two and came about when Triple H said that he should have been in the main event with Austin and The Rock. But The Undertaker took exception to that and said The Game had never beaten him and the fight was on.

The two went back and forth from the start with both guys getting in a few of their signatures like Hunter’s knee to the face and The Undertaker’s “Old School” before referee Mike Chioda became a big part of the match. He first took away Triple H’s trusty sledgehammer that he’d grabbed from behind the timekeeper and then took his first bump of the night off an Undertaker slingshot to Hunter but was up in time to make the two count on the ensuing chokeslam. That must not have made ‘Taker too happy as he proceeded to kick him and drop an elbow, knocking him out of the match for more than 10 minutes as the two turned this into an all-out fight.

They battled into the crowd and made their way towards the technical equipment, at which point Triple H began to rattle ‘Taker with a conveniently placed steel chair. But The Deadman fought back and tossed Hunter from the stage about 10 feet down and then dropped an elbow on him. The paramedics tried to help out Triple H but he shoved them away and they made their way back toward the ring and battled it out some more. ‘Taker finally was able to get Chioda moving and went for the Last Ride but Trips had grabbed the sledgehammer and hit ‘Taker in the head with it in a pretty cool spot. Chioda crawled over to make the count but The Undertaker was able to kick out at two. Triple H went to the corner and climbed to the middle rope for some punches but as he tends to do, The Undertaker turned that into a Last Ride and this time was able to get the win with it. The ref being out for so long was a little much but it allowed for some of the fun stuff in the match. It’s pretty awesome when this is the worst of the three WrestleMania matches between these two legends. 9-0.
