The San Diego Chargers are reportedly very serious about drafting one of this year’s top quarterback prospects.

We are just weeks away from the NFL Draft, but already rumors are starting to heat up about those pesky skill position players we all get obsessed with. Let’s be honest, it’s a drag when your team spends a first or second round pick on a position like offensive line or some defensive player you’ve barely heard of. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad pick, but we all love flashy things and there are few flashier toys than top skill position players in the NFL Draft.

Specifically, when a team drafts a quarterback — and does does relatively high — it’s a big deal to fans. It doesn’t always pan out (See: Ryan Nassib and the Giants) but draft a quarterback high enough and you stoke coals. Double that if your team already has an established franchise guy (Again, see: Ryan Nassib and the Giants).

According to Jason Cole from Bleacher Report, the San Diego Chargers are very serious about selecting what would likely be Philip Rivers heir apparent in the early rounds of this year’s draft.

Rivers hasn’t given much indication that he’s winding down his career, although there have been rumors about his departure for a while now. A few years ago it was rumored he’d be on the move to Tennessee, a team now employing Marcus Mariota as the future of the position there. Rivers has a few years left in him and he’s the best option the Chargers could hope for if they plan on being competitive. Drafting his replacement isn’t outside the realm of possibility, even in a class of quarterbacks has hit-and-miss as this one seems to be.

The most identifiable target would be Cal’s Davis Webb, who is a local kid — even more so thanks to the move to Los Angeles — and is raw enough to be stashed away. He might not end up being the heir apparent, but he makes sense as a draft able prospect who could sit behind Rivers. It’s rumors that the team is interested in higher graded prospects like DeShone Kizer and Joshua Dobbs that should keep things interesting for a team that is in desperate need of all the fan attention it can gather.
