Jordan Spieth turned in a disappointing 75 in the final round of the 2017 Masters to finish tied for 11th place, well behind champion Sergio Garcia.
After posting a 68 in Round 3 thanks to a streak of three birdies in four holes, Spieth was right in the mix entering Sunday. The 2015 champion’s hopes were dashed rather quickly in Round 4, as Spieth bogeyed two of the first three holes, sandwiched around a birdie.
That meant Spieth needed nothing short of a perfect round the rest of the way to catch leaders Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia and Charl Schwartzel. Spieth bogeyed the par-3 sixth, and another bogey on 10 just about ended any chances of a comeback.
To make matters worse, Spieth once again had a disastrous showing on the par-3 12th, where he quadruple bogeyed in Round 4 last year as part of a huge collapse. Spieth’s tee shot found the water, leading to a double-bogey and dropping him even further behind the lead pack.
After another bogey on 14, Spieth at least managed to end the tournament on a high note. Spieth birdied three of the final four holes, bringing him to +3 for the day and -1 for the tournament overall, tied for 11th place.
With world No. 1 Dustin Johnson out due to a back injury, Spieth entered the 2017 Masters as the favorite and will be very disappointed with his showing overall. A combined score of -7 between Friday and Saturday at least gave Spieth a small chance, but the pair of 75s from Round 1 and 4 were too much to overcome.
Spieth will be thinking a long time about the quadruple-bogey in Round 1 on the par-5 15 that gave him a huge deficit, and again will have to face his demons on 12 when the 2018 Masters rolls around. Here’s how Spieth stacked up to the rest of the leaderboard and other notables at the 2017 Masters.
