IndyCar Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach results: James Hinchcliffe wins
James Hinchcliffe captured a long overdue IndyCar victory on the streets of Long Beach. Here are the results from the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
James Hinchcliffe had long aspired to win the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, and on Sunday he achieved that goal. The Verizon IndyCar Series fan favorite took the checkered flag on the streets of Long Beach, earning his first victory since April 2015.
Previous race winner Sebastien Bourdais was the runner-up and further built his lead in the title points standings, while Josef Newgarden earned his first podium finish as a member of Team Penske by coming third.
The race had only one accident, and it took place on the first lap. Newgarden’s teammate Will Power got into the back of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Charlie Kimball and spun him. That knocked Kimball out of the Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Three other cars failed to finish after mechanical problems, all from the same team and two of which were running in the Top 3 at the time. Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi and Marco Andretti all had separate, unrelated issues that doomed their races.
The day was especially heartbreaking for Hunter-Reay, a former Long Beach race winner who was running second at the time his car decided to lose power.
Polesitter Helio Castroneves started the race up front but got a poor start off the line and had his hopes further dented by two different pit road speeding penalties. Meanwhile, teammate Simon Pagenaud started last but wound up in the Top 10—almost echoing the crazy finish from the first race at St. Petersburg.
