The Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series after being down 3-1 to the Cleveland Indians. Here are the Cubs hanging their World Series banner at Wrigley.
It only took 108 years, but the Chicago Cubs are finally World Series Champions again. Chicago was far and away the best team in baseball. The Cubs went 103-58 during the regular season and made it to their first World Series since the 1945 Fall Classic.
After beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the NLCS, the Cubs quickly found themselves down 3-1 to the American League Champion Cleveland Indians, a team with its own massive World Series Championship drought.
Overcoming all odds, the Cubs would win the crucial seventh game of the series in extra innings after a rain delay to be World Series Champions. It was only fitting that rain would delay the Cubs’ ability to raise their World Series banner at Wrigley Field on Monday, April 10. Here is the unveiling of the 2016 World Series Championship banner for the Cubs.
Keep in mind that the Cubs haven’t played a meaningful ball game at Wrigley Field since the 2016 World Series. Chicago entered play on Monday night with a 4-2 record on the year. The Cubs’ first two series of the 2017 MLB season came on the road against NL Central rivals. Chicago took two of three on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Another interesting wrinkle to this is that the team that Chicago will have its home opener against is the same Dodgers team that the Cubs beat to get to the World Series. Los Angeles had a good team and should be in the mix to contend in the National League this fall. However, the Dodgers have not made it to a World Series since winning it all back in 1988 over the Oakland Athletics.
