Is The Fate of the Furious in 3D? We tell you if you can experience Vin Diesel’s latest Fast & Furious movie in 3D when it speeds into theaters.

Is The Fate of the Furious in 3D? Fans are wondering if the latest installment in the Fast & Furious movie franchise will be getting the three-dimensional treatment when it drives into theaters this weekend.

It is — but not in the United States. International websites are showing a 3D release for the latest Vin Diesel action flick, yet the official Fast & Furious website from studio Universal Pictures directs American moviegoers to Fandango which only lists The Fate of the Furious as showing in IMAX 2D.

That information is further backed up by the film’s listing on the IMAX website, which likewise only displays listings in IMAX 2D.

It all adds up to a head-scratcher: how is an American blockbuster movie getting a 3D release in foreign territories, but not in the United States? Shouldn’t The Fate of the Furious be in 3D in its home country?

As it turns out this is actually standard operating procedure for the Fast & Furious franchise. In 2015, Furious 7 also received a 3D and IMAX 3D release overseas but only got a standard IMAX release in America.

The francise has a huge international fan base — on par with if not bigger than its domestic fan base — so it’s possible that the added expense of the 3D version only makes sense in the foreign market.

Plus, 3D might almost be overkill. Given how many cars and buildings are likely to be destroyed in The Fate of the Furious, fans would be avoiding flying tires, debris pieces and bullets every ten seconds. It would probably be an almost over-active 3D movie, which in turn would make it a very expensive movie to have in 3D in the first place.

While you can’t see Dominic Toretto and his friends (or is that foes now?) in 3D, you can still catch The Fate of the Furious in 2D and IMAX 2D starting this Thursday, April 13.
