Don’t expect Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins to hold out for a long-term deal.
The Washington Redskins go into the 2017 season with their starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins, on the franchise tag once again.
Cousins played on the tag this best season after being a season removed from becoming the team’s starting quarterback. His overall play has been incredibly solid for the team and it leaves one to wonder why don’t the Redskins just invest long-term in their 28-year old quarterback.
The team clearly still isn’t comfortable investing top quarterback money into Cousins and are asking him to prove himself once again, something the quarterback is willing to do.
"“The team would need to make that decision and say that this is a guy we’re going to commit to in the long haul,” Cousins said as he appeared on ESPN’s NFL Live. “I’m very comfortable playing under the franchise tag.”"
The rumors revolving around Cousins’ future with the Redskins were brought to attention this offseason when his former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan took the San Francisco 49ers head coaching job.
It’s been widely reported that Cousins would like to reunite with his former coach, but that’s something that’s not on his mind entering to the 2017 season as he prepares to be the Redskins quarterback.
"“I haven’t heard anything. I’m not expecting anything to happen,” Cousins said. “And I’m looking forward to getting back to work with my teammates.”"
Everything is pointing in the direction of Cousins playing for the Redskins in 2017. Anything beyond that is all guesses, but at least Redskins fans can be relieved that their quarterback is focused on the present and what he can control.
