San Francisco Giants All-Star catcher Buster Posey has been placed on the seven-day disabled list because of a feared concussion.

Buster Posey was struck in the head with a 94 MPH fastball by Diamondbacks starting pitcher Taijuan Walker Monday night. The Giants are going to proceed with caution placing their starting backstop on the seven-day disabled list.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area first reported the news regarding Posey.

The normal DL time length is 10 days, but there is also a seven-day DL designated for players with head injuries. It appears that Posey did not suffer any major head trauma, as Pavlovic points out in his piece. Posey likely could have avoided a DL stint but the organization wants to be extra careful with its most valuable player.

Posey, 30, started off his 2017 season with seven hits in his first 27 at-bats. While Posey has always been known for his hot bat at the plate, the Giants will likely miss him just as much on the defensive end. Posey was a 2.0 Defensive WAR player in 2016 and has always excelled at pitch framing.

Veteran catcher Tim Federowicz has been called up to the big league team in a corresponding transaction. Federowicz is a bit of an underwhelming replacement as he is a career .194 hitter in five major league seasons. Nick Hundley will likely get the bulk of the work behind the plate while Posey is inactive. In 2016 with the Rockies, Hundley hit .260 with 10 home runs. He has disappointed during his Giants tenure in 2017 recording just one hit in seven at bats to start off the early portion of the season.

Right-handed pitcher Clayton Blackburn was designated for assignment to clear room for the extra catcher on the 40-man roster.
