There is speculation that WWE may be interested in Rob Gronkowski, once his NFL days are done.

So if you’ve been following WWE lately, say since WrestleMania 33, you’ve noticed a couple of appearances from NFL star Rob Gronkowski. He’s been getting involved in matches of WWE’s resident madman, Mojo Rawley. But could we see more of Gronk in the future?

If you ask Rawley, he seems to think so. He spoke with TMZ Sports on Wednesday, and revealed that WWE is indeed interested in signing him when his playing days are over.

Gronkowski appeared in the front row at WrestleMania 33 last Sunday in Orlando, and made his presence felt during the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Toward the end of the match, he had a confrontation with Jinder Mahal that resulted in Mahal throwing a drink at him. But he would pay for that, as Gronkowski would get in the ring and deliver an NFL-quality shoulder tackle. It was his own WrestleMania Moment.

But that shot was returned this week on SmackDown Live, when Gronkowski appeared again. This time, it was Mahal who ended up wearing a beverage. When he tried to get back in the face of the New England tight end, it backfired, to the delight of the Boston crowd.

Rawley and Gronkowski have been seen training together in recent weeks, which would lend some credibility to this story. But it wouldn’t be the first time an NFL star traded cleats in for a pair of wrestling boots. Bill Goldberg briefly played for the Atlanta Falcons, former WCW wrestler Steve “Mongo” McMichael had a pair of Pro Bowl appearances, and even Brock Lesnar tried out for the Minnesota Vikings.

Will we see Gronk in WWE after he decides to stop being Tom Brady’s favorite target? It’s unlikely. But knowing WWE and their over-the-top antics when it comes to Hollywood and pairing up with other sports, who knows. In this business, the appropriate answer is “never say never.”
