The first goal of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs was scored by Tanner Glass of the New York Rangers.

The 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs are underway. Five series are getting their start on Wednesday April 12, including the series between the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens.

There are some bets going around about who would score the first goal of the postseason. If you had Tanner Glass of the Rangers in your pool, collect your winnings.

(Also, consider playing the lottery because you’re either some kind of genius or extremely lucky.)

Glass isn’t usually someone who scores goal. Traditionally, he’s known more for his grit, hits and energy than scoring goals. Entering Wednesday’s action, Glass had just one goal and one assist in 60 playoff games. He doubles his previous career total in postseason goals and increases his career playoff point total by 50 percent. This is Glass’s first playoff goal since 2008.

The Canadiens don’t do a good job on this face-off. Off the face-off, the puck goes straight to Glass, who gets a wide open look at the net. Give him credit for the quick release because beating Carey Price high glove side is never easy.

It’s kind of fitting Glass got the first goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. This time of year, unsung heroes love to emerge. Guys like Glass have the opportunity to make a name for themselves. It’s still extremely early in the postseason, but right now, it looks like Glass is the favorite to win the Conn Smythe.

The Rangers had been criticized for playing him while sitting star rookie Pavel Buchnevich. However, Glass is making them look smart with a goal tonight. They’ll need all the goals they can get to beat Price and the Canadiens.
