Tom Herman will lead his first spring game as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns on Saturday. Here’s what to watch for in the game.
There probably isn’t a program carrying more intrigue with them going into the 2017 college football season than the Texas Longhorns. After going all in on Tom Herman and firing Charlie Strong, the Longhorns are firmly in belief this is the time they will turn things around.
The 2016 season was one that was full of promise for Texas but quickly devolved into a disaster. Strong was ultimately let go and the Longhorns wasted no time landing Herman and bringing him into the fold.
With a new head coach leading the team and the annual Orange-White game taking place on Saturday, it will be a first glimpse of how things are going. Here are five things to watch for in the Longhorns’ spring game.
5. Who will replace D’Onta Foreman?
The good news for Herman is that he isn’t losing much in his first year as coach. He’s got plenty of returning players on the roster and will at least have some older players he can rely on as he transitions things into his team.
One player that is gone is running back D’Onta Foreman. The Texas back is headed to the NFL and that means the Longhorns will have a big hole to fill on offense. The massive Chris Warren is expected to be the guy at the position but there should be plenty of competition for the spot.
Whether it’s Warren or someone else on the roster, expect the Longhorns to try and find a replacement right away. The Orange-White game will provide a chance to see who can step up and take command while running the ball.
