Darryl Strawberry was back with his good friend Dwight ‘Doc’ Gooden on opening day hanging out with New York Mets fans. Strawberry and Gooden had had a falling out after Strawberry voiced some concerns over Gooden not being able to stay clean after missing a charity event. The two have since worked it out and Mets fans were able to enjoy both of them together on opening day.

“It is a good to be back together as friends. Life is too short,” Strawberry told the On The Mark Podcast. “Things happen and it’s important to kind of get to the place inside where you can ask for forgiveness and just move forward and be there for each other, rooting for each other. Lift each other up.”

Strawberry acknowledged that Gooden was deeply hurt by his comments. Strawberry had assumed Gooden was back using, while Gooden maintained he wasn’t and that he was dealing with the passing away of his mother.

“We all should be concerned for our friends,” Strawberry said. “We won a lot of games together. Maybe the timing was wrong, I should have just paused before I said some things. I regret the way I went about it. I just needed to ask for forgiveness so I could be healed inside, and he could be healed inside.”

Strawberry and Gooden won a World Series together both with the Mets and the Yankees. They had both gone through a lot off the field before winning again with the Yankees. Strawberry enjoyed them all but looks back on the first World Series with the Mets most fondly.

“After losing in 85, Davey Johnson just said we are going to dominate this year. We knew it was our time and we came out the gates and never looked back. It was a remarkable year for us,” Strawberry said.

Strawberry was very complimentary to Gooden and how he burst onto the major league scene as a 19-year old.

“I have never seen a better pitcher than Dwight his first two years in the league. He was unhittable. I used to get bored being in the outfield. He was that good,” Strawberry said.

Strawberry is a busy man these days and has added to his workload joining up with RedZone Map as a spokesperson. The app offers users the ability to take either the safest route or riskier route to their destination providing real “it’s happening now” crime reporting. The campaign is to promote safety and social empowerment.
