San Diego Padres

Last week: 3-3
Last rank: 30

What a week for the Padres! Climbing out of the 30th slot for the first time this year. The Friars had a very good week, with Manuel Margot continuing to rake, Wil Myers hitting for the cycle, and Jered Weaver looking like the right-handed version of Jamie Moyer.

Margot has been a force at the top of the lineup. His power numbers so far this year are not sustainable, but he could end the year with 15 homers and 40 steals. Still only 22, Margot is a very exciting player for a rebuilding team to hang their hat on.

The Padres are off to a much better start than expected. Myers, Margot, and Yangervis Solarte have been hot at the plate. The starting rotation has been about as good as could be hoped for given its composition, and the bullpen has not blown a lead.

Milwaukee Brewers

Last week: 2-3
Last rank: 26

Despite the losses, the Brewers played a very competitive week of baseball games. They opened the season by losing a four-game set with the Colorado Rockies, but actually outscored them by a run over the course of four games. This team can be more competitive than people realize.

The Brewers are still a young, rebuilding team, and it shows. They have struck out the most in the National League and rank 13th in batting average and on-base percentage. They will continue taking plenty of big swings, hitting home runs, and striking out. Orlando Arcia, Keon Broxton, and Domingo Santana need to keep getting their at-bats regardless of the actual results.

Wily Peralta has pitched very well so far for the Brew Crew, and is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA. That’s a positive. What’s not a positive is seeing Zach Davies with an 0-2 record with a 10.61 ERA. Davies was a bright spot last year as a rookie, but has been hit all over the yard in his first two starts this year, allowing 16 hits in 9.1 innings.
