Andre Johnson will sign a one-day contract to end distinguished career with the Texans

Andre Johnson will sign a one-day contract on Wednesday to retire with the Houston Texans per the team’s website. In 2003, Johnson was drafted third overall by Houston. He spent 12 of his 14 seasons in the NFL with the Texans, leaving as an unrestricted free agent in 2014. Johnson spent the next two years with the Colts and Titans.

Throughout his prestigious career, Johnson racked up 14,185 yards on 1,062 receptions. Johnson averaged an astonishing 13.4 yards per reception throughout his 14 years in the NFL. He caught a total of 70 touchdowns, 64 of which came with the Texans. Additionally, the wideout leaves behind a legacy in Houston as a majority of wide receiving records belong to him.

Johnson owns the Texans record for career touchdowns and receptions along with single-game records for receiving yards, receptions, and touchdowns.

Despite being the franchise’s first long-time, Hall of Fame caliber player, Johnson built his legacy off the field as well. He participates in charity work all over Houston, most notably taking underprivileged children on Toys-R-Us shopping sprees for Christmas time. Johnson spends upwards of  $15,000 each year on toys for local children. Although Johnson played for the Colts and Titans over his last two years, he continues his charity work throughout Houston to this day.

The Texans will host a press conference for Johnson on Wednesday before officially retiring Andre Johnson as a part of the team. General Manager Rick Smith and Vice Chairman Cal McNair are slated to speak at the event.

Johnson will be the first player officially honored by the Texans upon retiring in the organization’s short, 15-year history. For that reason, it remains unclear as to what the Texans will do to honor Johnson in the coming months.

Whatever it may be, Texans fans expect Johnson’s number 80 to hang from the rafters at NRG Stadium sooner than later.
