2017 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers 7-round mock
The 49ers tight end situation is getting dire. It’s bad enough that it’s worth taking on a guy with a starter ceiling like Eric Saubert. His inconsistency is quite frustrating, but maybe Shanahan can pound it out of him. Vance McDonald has shown upside, but his potential is quickly resembling a lack of pure talent.
Jerod Evans has huge enough arm strength to warrant a late round pick. He has to work on his accuracy, but he’s fleet footed. At 6-foot-3 and 232 pounds, Evans has ideal size. He needs a lot of time to develop, but his physical tools are definitely there.
Conor McDermott is a local kid who should help the San Francisco 49ers. He went to UCLA, so he’ll be going north to the Bay Area. McDermott has excellent athleticism, ranking fourth among tackles in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. UCLA doesn’t run the west coast offense, so he’ll need some time to develop; However, with a 6-foot-8 frame, McDermott could be the heir apparent to Staley.

The 49ers have a need at strong safety and at outside linebacker. So why not draft someone who could help fill at least one of those needs and potentially both? Jalen Reeves-Maybin is a heck of a prospect. He has experience as both a safety and a linebacker. Reeves-Maybin is quite raw, but he’s quite the specimen. At 230 pounds, he’d be a tad bit heavy for safety, but he definitely has the coverage skills necessary to be one. Though his future is likely at linebacker, he could pull off safety as well, especially in run packages.
