NBA Playoffs: Is Isaiah Thomas playing in Game 2?
Isaiah Thomas has a decision to make. With his sister’s funeral on the horizon, in Washington, will Thomas play in Game 2?
Chyna Thomas died Saturday morning in a tragic car accident, near Tacoma, Washington. Playing with a heavy heart, Isaiah Thomas then had to suit up for his team’s playoff game against Chicago. The Celtics fell to the Bulls, 106-102. Thomas had 33 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in 38 minutes. He had the best plus-minus on the team at +12. He had six turnovers, though his offense is more important than his turnovers.
According to head coach Brad Stevens, Thomas is expected to play in Game 2 tonight and then fly home to Washington for his sister’s funeral and to be with his family. He is also expected to be back with the team for Game 3 on Friday. The Celtics, to their credit, have made clear that they support Thomas and he should take the time he needs, even if it means missing games.
Thomas played very well in Game 1, and one expects him to come out with a fury in Game 2 as well. The Celtics are a deep team but Thomas’ offense has been key for them and playing without him would certainly put Boston at a disadvantage. When Thomas plays at the level he has been accustomed to this year, the Celtics always have a chance to win.

Thomas shared a tearful moment with long-time friend and teammate, Avery Bradley, before Game 1. He also teared up during the moment of silence. The emotions are real in sports, and we can never forget that these players are people first. No one would blame Thomas for missing a game. Nothing is more important than life and family. Thomas will do what he needs to do to recover. If his recovery is done best on the basketball court, then we will be lucky to watch him.
