After Bayern Munich’s controversial Champions League loss to Real Madrid, two NBA stars got into it on Twitter.

Bayern Munich fans around the world were very vocal online on Tuesday afternoon, as the German club was eliminated from the Champions League after some questionable refereeing. Real Madrid advanced after scoring three goals in extra time, winning 6-3 on aggregate.

Perhaps chief among the upset Bayern fans was Dallas Mavericks player (and German native) Dirk Nowitzki, who was chirped on Twitter by Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid.

Bayern lost 4-2 to Real Madrid in the second leg of this quarterfinal matchup. Despite entering the game trailing 2-1 on aggregate, they managed to battle back and send the game to extra time.

A handful of major refereeing decisions sunk them though, with Arturo Vidal sent off for a soft tackle and Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice (including the extra time winner) while pretty clearly offside. Referees looked the other way several times earlier in the match, though, as Bayern players were tackled harshly in the 18-yard box (although they did get one penalty).

Embiid tweeted his support for Madrid throughout the game, directing multiple chirps at Nowitzki.

The back-and-forth between these NBA stars seems to be all in good fun, but the loss has to sting for a Bayern fan (and Bavaria native) like Nowitzki. Fortunately for him, Bayern are still leading the Bundesliga by eight points.

Embiid’s Madrid will now move on to the Champions League semifinal, where they’ll continue their campaign to defend the trophy they won last season.

Both players likely have ample time for watching soccer these days, with neither the Mavs nor the Sixers taking part in the ongoing NBA playoffs.
