Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich 4-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday, April 18. Here are all the highlights from the match.

Bayern Munich started well in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie against Real Madrid, knowing they needed at least two goals to advance. They should’ve taken the lead inside 10 minutes, when Robert Lewandowski was denied by an excellent block by Marcelo, and Arjen Robben missed the rebound.

Real came back into the match after getting pegged during the opening exchanges, and probably had the better of the chances in an end-to-end first half. Manuel Neuer was forced into a full-stretch save from Dani Carvajal, while Mats Hummels made two vital blocks on his return to the starting XI.

The speed and quality of play from both teams was stunning, with Casemiro and Xabi Alonso struggling to control the play at the base of their respective midfields. Alonso was uncharacteristically sloppy in possession, while Casemiro was forced into a series of fouls to stem the flow of Bayern’s counter-attacks.

Bayern were offered a route back into the game early in the second half when Casemiro fouled Robben in the box. The visiting players wanted a second yellow card for the Brazilian as well as a penalty, but their calls were waved off by the referee. Lewandowski converted the penalty to Keylor Navas’ right.

Real Madrid went on to equalize in the 76th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his third goal of the tie with an expertly placed header. But the aggregate lead was short-lived as Sergio Ramos turned the ball into his own net two minutes later.

With the match heading toward extra time, the visitors suffered another setback when Arturo Vidal was shown a second yellow card for what looked like a good tackle on Marco Asensio.

Real took control just before halftime of extra time. Ronaldo scored his fourth goal of the tie from what replays showed was an offside position. He made it three for Real on the night shortly after the extra time interval, tapping in after a wonderful run from Marcelo. Asensio finished the job minutes later, after a mazy run and finish.

This would have been a difficult loss for Bayern to take under any circumstances, but it will be extra painful knowing two bad refereeing decisions cost them.
