If reports are true, it looks like Nintendo will be following up the discontinuation of the NES Classic Edition with the SNES Mini. It’s scheduled to release this Christmas.

If you weren’t able to purchase the NES Classic Edition prior to its discontinuation, we feel your pain. Although some of us were lucky enough to get our hands on one, many of us weren’t, and it’s an unfortunate situation. It’s time to put that in the past now and look forward to the SNES Mini. Eurogamer has reported that Nintendo is working on that next for a Christmas release.

If we’re being honest, this isn’t much of a surprise. We always had an idea of this happening and it’s definitely a good move. Nintendo does need to get their act together, though, especially when it comes to meeting the demands of the consumers.

The NES Classic Edition was a commercial failure. This has nothing to do with the console itself, but the shortages of it at various retailers. From day one, it was almost impossible to get one in stores. You may have had some luck online by constantly refreshing webpages, but chances were very slim. We don’t want to go through the same experience with the SNES Mini. Nintendo Switch’s are still hard to find in some places, so that doesn’t get our hopes up.

With the NES Mini being discontinued, Nintendo shifting their focus to the SNES Mini is probably the biggest reason why. If they want this to be successful, they need to have more in stock at all retailers. Like we said, going through the same situation all over again will only piss fans off even more. On the bright side, the SNES has a variety of classic games. Playing Super Mario World and Super Metroid with the original controller again is going to be a blast.
