Zlatan Ibrahimovic injures knee vs. Anderlecht in Europa League match (Video)
The Manchester United striker left their Europa League game after a gruesome landing on his right leg.
In the 91st minute of his Manchester United’s tie with Anderlecht at Old Trafford, forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic came down from an aerial challenge and injured his right leg, forcing him to leave the game. Ibrahimovic landed awkwardly in the 18-yard box after jockeying with defender Kara Mbodji, and was helped off the field by medics.
The Swedish striker was switched off for Anthony Martial after the incident in stoppage time. Ibrahimovic was removed from the game with United locked in a 1-1 draw with the Belgian side, just before extra time. Ibrahimovic had three shots previously in the match.
United went on to win the tie 2-1 after Marcus Rashford scored in the 107th minute to complete a brace. Now the only English team left in European competition, United’s 3-2 aggregate victory advances them to the semifinal round of the Europa League.
In the next round, United will play one of Ajax (Netherlands), Celta Vigo (Spain), or Lyon (France). With qualification for the Champions League at stake, the second-tier European competition has become a priority for United this season. Man United are looking to be the first English winners of the trophy since Chelsea in 2013.
This injury is worrisome for the 35-year-old Ibrahimovic, now at an age where damage to ligaments can have very serious consequences. It’s also a blow to United, who remain in the race for the Premier League top four as well as the Europa League title.
