Tampa Bay Rays centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier made an incredible catch to rob Brian McCann of extra bases during Friday night’s game.
Two-time AL gold glove winner Kevin Kiermaier showed why he is considered one of the best defenders in the majors during Friday night’s game against the Houston Astros.
It was the top of the 2nd inning, and McCann hit a deep fly ball toward center field that looked like it was going to go for extra bases, but Kiermaier decided it was best if the ball didn’t land. He raced back and made a spectacular leaping catch toward the wall, securing the ball in his glove and prevented McCann from being credited with a hit. He then nonchalantly threw the ball back toward his pitcher like it was a routine play.
This was a remarkable play that kept the game tied at 1-1 at the time of the play. Kiermaier’s defense is what landed him a six-year contract extension this past month with the Rays, that was worth north of $50 million.

Although Kiermaier prides himself on his defensive prowess, he has seemed to have made improvements with his swing during the early going of the season. Coming into tonight’s game, he had a batting average of .292, with 13 runs scored, and four stolen bases, a superb start to the season that has helped the Rays win nine games in the early going.
Although this will certainly not be the only incredible defensive play that will be talked about, we can still appreciate how easy he makes plays like this look. If he continues making the improvements that he has so far on the other side of the field, then he has a chance to elevate his game, and become a truly special player.
