Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera strained his groin during last night’s game, and underwent an MRI Saturday morning.

Miguel Cabrera strained his groin in the seventh inning of Friday night’s game against the Twins, and he was reportedly going to have an MRI Saturday.

Tigers beat reporter Jason Beck confirmed he had the MRI Saturday morning. Although the results of the MRI have yet to be announced, Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus already announced that Cabrera will be held out for the remainder of the team’s games this weekend against the Twins.

Once the MRI results are received, they will give the team a clear picture on whether Cabrera will require a trip to the disabled list, or just a few days off to recover from this nagging injury. Groin injuries can be very deceiving, so a few days off for their star player isn’t a bad idea. I

n 16 games so far this season, the 14-year vet was batting at a .268 clip with three home runs, and nine RBIs. Cabrera has batted with an average of at least .313 in 11 of the last 12 seasons, and there’s a good chance he could hit that mark again this season despite his slow start.

If this groin injury proves to be serious and requires Cabrera to hit the DL, it will be a huge loss to Detroit’s lineup. The Tigers play in the same division as the defending American League champions, the Cleveland Indians. They had hopes of beating them out this year and being crowned the champions of their AL Central division at the very least, but this injury dims that light a bit. Until the MRI results are revealed, the Tigers will just have to remain optimistic that a little rest will do the trick for Cabrera.
