30. 1987-88 Washington Bullets

Believe it or not, the 1987-88 Washington Bullets were not the worst playoff team that year. That dubious distinction belonged to the New York Knicks. Still, the bottom of the Eastern Conference was bad enough that the Bullets were able to get in.

With a record of 38-44, the Bullets managed to snag the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference and earned the right to face the Detroit Pistons in the first round. To the surprise of everyone, the Bullets gave the Pistons a fight until the last game.

Down 2-0 and with the series looking like an inevitable sweep, the Bullets had enough pride to win both of their home games and force the series back to Detroit. The Pistons would ultimately mop the floor with them in Detroit, but they at least proved to be a challenge.

So yes, the Bullets were a bad playoff team simply because of the fact they entered with a losing record. They aren’t near the top of this list because there have certainly been a lot worse then them. Still, it takes a special kind of season to make the playoffs six games below .500 and not even be the worst in your own conference.
