The secondary-ticket marketplace GameHedge has a “Good Game” guarantee that it hopes will entice fans to purchase from it.

Fans at PNC Park for the New York Yankees’ 11-5 road win over the Pittsburgh Pirates or at U.S. Cellular Field to watch Cleveland Indians thrash the host Chicago White Sox 7-0 on Saturday could have used this offering by GameHedge.

The “Good Game” guarantee works pretty simply when it comes to baseball tickets purchased through GameHedge. If the home team loses the game by at least five runs, GameHedge will refund half of the price paid for each ticket.

For fans of the road team in each game, this obviously creates extra incentive for their team to win big. For fans of the home team, it creates a potential “conflict of interest” even bigger than having a player on the road team in a fantasy lineup. If it looks like the home team is going to lose the game, fans who purchased via GameHedge might actually hope that the road team wins by at least five runs to trigger the guarantee.

While the offer seems simple, fans will want to know how likely it is that the guarantee will be activated. According to a press release, 316 games in the 2016 MLB season were won by the road team by a margin of at least five runs. A total of $230 million was spent on MLB game tickets last season. Had all those dollars been spent on GameHedge, that’s $13 million that would have been refunded to fans last season.

As of the time of the release, there had already been 20 MLB games played this season that qualified for the guarantee. As MLB teams continue to raise ticket prices, that increase also affects the secondary market. That potential refund figure for GameHedge customers will also continue to grow.
