IndyCar Grand Prix of Alabama results: Josef Newgarden wins
Josef Newgarden earned his first Verizon IndyCar Series win for Team Penske on Sunday. Here are the results from the 2017 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.
Josef Newgarden can now call himself a two-time Verizon IndyCar Series winner at Barber Motorsports Park. The Team Penske newcomer snatched victory away from the jaws of teammate Will Power on Sunday to take the 2017 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.
Newgarden had been running strong all day, but it was Power who had captured the pole and stayed in front for the majority of the race. Then with just 15 laps to go, his No. 2 Penske Chevrolet suffered a flat tire that forced him to pit; the 2014 series champion would wind up finishing 14th while Newgarden assumed the lead.
Four-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon is now also a four-time runner-up in the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Dixon, who started fourth, put together another consistent performance but just couldn’t close the gap to Josef Newgarden in the final segment. It still came out a win for him, though, as he narrowed Sebastien Bourdais’ lead in the championship to just six points.
There were only two cautions on the day: one for debris off Ryan Hunter-Reay’s car in early contact with James Hinchcliffe and another for a spin by Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot. Marco Andretti had issues on the parade lap and started the race three laps down, a deficit he would not overcome.
