The Rockies were already off to an impressive start in 2017, but Colorado appears to be getting stronger as the season progresses. A week ago, the club was in first place, but had a minus-7 run differential. After an 8-0 victory over San Francisco Sunday, that run differential is now plus-10. Colorado has won six of its last seven games overall, as well as six of its last seven against the Giants and three of five versus the Dodgers.

No team in baseball has scored more runs that the Diamondbacks this season. In fact, Arizona is a full 12 runs ahead of the second place Yankees and Reds in runs scored this season. The D-backs also showed they’ve got staying power with three wins in four attempts against the Dodgers this week.

As a result, Los Angeles wasn’t able to make up any ground in the standings. The Dodgers bullpen allowed five walks in a nine-run eighth inning against the D-Backs Friday night, then Kenta Maeda was hit hard Saturday. Despite an otherwise solid week for the pitching staff (12 runs allowed in four games), the Dodgers surrendered 24 runs to Arizona while losing the first two games of the weekend series.

Not surprisingly, the San Diego Padres have the worst run differential in the major leagues. Opponents have outscored the Padres by 33 runs this season, 13 more than the Angels, Braves, and Giants, who are tied for the second worst margin to date.

As if things couldn’t possibly get worse for the San Francisco Giants, ace Madison Bumgarner suffered a serious injury during a mountain biking accident and was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his career. Of course, the loss of Bumgarner only impacts San Francisco’s scoring opportunities every five days, and the Giants scored just 10 runs in five games this week and were shut out twice.
